Our buddies over at Filmworks have produced the first big budget movie in the UAE, City of Life, together with director Ali Mostafa. The films is about 3 people from 3 different walks of life whose lives collide “in a city where ambition, growth and opportunity are encouraged and dreams can still manifest”.
We’ve heard about this film since the early days, with lots of stories from behind the scenes, so we are very keen to go and watch this one! The film premieres att DIFF, tomorrow, Friday December 11th, 2009

But, after having visited the Rugby Sevens this past weekend, we managed to snap pictures of two really nice almost-mullets (but not quite). Enjoy!

Dr Fakih

Driving on Beach Road in Dubai, the long stretch of tarmac seems to be filled exclusively with various beauty salons, dentists and medical clinics. But there’s one fine establishment that stands out above the rest: Dr Fakih, Gynecologist.
We are wondering if when Mr Fakih (or Mrs Fakih?) grew up did his name sub consciously made him become a gynecologist..? Or, if not, has anybody at least told him that his name is kind of funny, given his trade?

Regardless, seeing funny company names in Dubai is something one gets used to after a while, and stop reflecting much over. But we’d like to list some of our favourites here, as a tribute to the humour that may come from a culturally diverse place, like Dubai.

Top 4..?

Lonely Planet recently put out a new guide “1000 Ultimate Experiences”, and one of the things they list there are the top 10 places to party in the world. But guess what? Neither London, New York, Paris nor Tokyo are listed. Shock! Instead it’s slightly more off the beaten track kind of places that are fighting for the glory. Cape Town is there in the 7th spot; Thessaloniki is placed 5; and we say mabrouk to the number 1 party city, Belgrade, Serbia! Then there are places we’ve barely heard about such as Baku (Azerbaijan) and La Paz (Bolivia), which made us wanna party hardy with oil and drug warlords like its 2012. And, at number 4, we find good ol’ Dubai! Now, fine, if your thing is champagne and Swarovski encrusted chandeliers -ok, Dubai is a good place for you to socialize with the rest of the “elite”. If not, well, we guess you’ll still have a good time. Anyway, here you can read the rest of the top 10.

REKKORD

There’s a new club thingy/event called REKKORD starting tonight at The Apartment. We don’t normally tout club events, but there are two very interesting aspects to this night. A, it is aimed towards the creative industry, so there will be ample options to get drunk with interesting people. And B, given the target audience there’s a promise of more offbeat music, which is quite unique in good ol’ DXB. So get your ass down to The Apartment tonight, and if you buy us a drink we will entertain you with our great personalities for a bit. Gwan!
