Summer Survival Kit

When you live in Dubai, you never get tired of talking about the weather. Even though there are only two seasons (hot and f#@*king hot), the comments and conversations are endless.

An essential skill the Dubai Expat must master is mental preparation for the 3-month descent into hell. Even if you take one month leave to travel to cooler climates, you still have to survive 50 degrees + temperatures for the remaining 2 months of summer.

Here’s the Rolling Thunder survival kit

1. Copious amounts of TV downloads (Henrik’s solution). Our Summer 2009 favourites are True Blood, Weeds and Entourage. A few new ones that might be worth checking out: I Survived a Japanese Game Show (mmhh), Merlin and Hung. The latter’s summary reads as follows: “Thomas Jane heads up the cast in this comedy as Ray, a middle-aged basketball coach who figures out how to put his exceptional physical endowments to use.” (mmhh).
2. Get an electric guitar. (Hermann’s solution) You’re neighbours probably won’t speak to you ever again, but with three months of continuous practice you might find yourself with a second career after summer.
3. Get Skype. (Hannelize’s solution). The VoIP has finally been unblocked by the authorities. We’re having lots of long sessions with friends and family scattered around the world.
4. Read books on how to become a millionaire. (Ziad’s solution). Put indoors time to good use and learn how to escape the 9-6 grind. Our current favourite is The 4-Hour Work Week.
5. Tip your AC repairman (Lazhar’s tip)
5. And then, finally, how about going to the dentist – on a regular basis. Preferably once a week. Seems like it can make time fly by.

Peace out!
